Civil war just hit theaters, and its Thursday night box office preview broke an A24 record. Written and directed by Alex Garland, the dystopian thriller stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny as journalists documenting a war between different American factions. THE Civil war reviews were generally very positive, with critics celebrating Garland’s chilling portrait of a country at war with itself.

Now like Civil war prepares its first weekend in theaters, Deadline reports that the film grossed $2.9 million during Thursday night previews at 2,931 locations. This sets a new record for A24, and Garland’s film is now expected to gross more than $20 million this weekend. The previous record holder was Ari Aster. Hereditarywhich grossed $1.3 million in previews.
