Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson Talks Ilsa’s Potential Death and Return

Rebecca Ferguson opens up about Ilsa Faust’s death in Mission: Impossible – Dead reckoning and a potential return in Mission: Impossible 8. The latest installment in the long-running action franchise sees IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team take on Gabriel (Esai Morales) and the all-powerful AI known as the Entity. The film tells of the death of one of the main Impossible mission cast member Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who is killed during a fight with Gabriel.

In an interview with Entertainment tonight promote Dune: part twoFerguson spoke about Ilsa Faust’s death in Mission: Impossible – Dead reckoning. The star suggested that after three Impossible mission films, she was no longer interested in her character’s arc and instead wanted Ilsa”go rogue“and no longer be one”team member“. When asked if she was done with the franchise, Ferguson replied: “You never know, right?“ Read his full comments below:

Remember that time we talked about those three Hollywood filming deals? Well, sometimes it’s the end and the actors get to say yes or no. So we were at this point and Mission is a huge dedication, and I did it, and it’s fantastic, and it’s amazing and [Christopher McQuarrie] And [Tom Cruise] wrote this incredible character. That’s just all you can do with a character, I think. I am entitled to my own opinion on this matter. I want her to go rogue. I’m interested in the dark side. I don’t want a team member. I’m not interested in it and felt like that’s where we were going, and it also takes a long time to do Mission. It’s blood, sweat and tears making these films and I’ve already done a TV show and two films. They’re always on a mission… But that’s what you never know, right?

Will Ilsa Faust return in Mission: Impossible 8?

Although Ilsa was apparently killed in Dead Reckoning, there are many theories that she is secretly still alive and I will come back in Mission: Impossible 8which was previously titled Dead Reckoning, part two. One theory suggests that Ilsa is simply playing dead, just like Ethan asked her to do earlier in the film. Fan theories have also pointed to the title, Dead Reckoning, in addition to various biblical references, as proof that Ilsa is still alive. Pretending to die could be an elaborate ruse designed to deceive and defeat the Entity.

However, despite these compelling fan theories, comments from Christopher McQuarrie and now Ferguson have cast doubt on Ilsa’s return. The director tried to squash the theories by claiming that Ilsa is actually dead and that audiences should not expect to see her return. Based on Ferguson’s comments, it seems like she’s truly done with the franchise. However, she still leaves fans with one final tease, saying “You never know, right?“IIsla’s return will be revealed when Mission: Impossible 8 released in theaters on May 23, 2025.
