Lily Gladstone makes history by winning the SAG Award

Gladstone also faced stiff competition in the category with Emma Stone (Poor Things), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Annette Bening (Nyad) all vying for Best Female Actor.

After receiving the award from actress Jessica Chastain, Gladstone shared that she was “proud” of her fellow actors for being “here in solidarity with all of our other unions,” referencing strikes in Hollywood last year last. She said, “I feel good about what you’ve done, what you’re doing,” she said. “It’s been a difficult year for all of us. Those who are in this room, those who are not in this room.

Gladstone continued: “The victory has to be here. It has to be on the board. It has to tell stories,” she added. “We bring empathy to a world that needs it so much. It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to shut down, to stop feeling, and we all courageously continue to feel and that humanizes people, it brings people out of the shadows. It brings visibility.

The actress then encouraged the audience and viewers to “keep telling stories to everyone in this room, to everyone watching overseas.” Those of you who are not actors but have a voice have a story that needs to be heard. Thank you to all the compassionate souls in this room and to all the storytellers here tonight. Keep speaking your truths and keep standing up for each other.

Gladstone, who is of Blackfoot and Nimiipuu descent, starred in Scorsese’s hit film as an Osage woman married to World War I veteran Ernest Burkhart (played by DiCaprio), who was an accomplice major cause of the systematic murder of the Osage people in the 1920s.

The film, based on a true story, took Gladstone’s fame to new heights, but also allowed the actress to make history throughout awards season.

Gladstone has already become the first Indigenous actor to win a Golden Globe, winning best actress in a drama film last January. She is also the first Native American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, having been shortlisted for Best Actress.

Even though he faced stiff competition at this year’s star-studded ceremonies, Gladstone continued to advocate for Indigenous representation in film and television and also recognized the need for trigger warning for indigenous public while watching Killers of the Flower Moon.

She previously said of the film, which tells a brutal part of Indigenous history, that Indigenous viewers should “see it when and only if you feel ready, and see it with people you feel safe with . She added: “You will probably have a lot of generational grief to deal with. You’re not alone.”
