Should Martin Scorsese make a science fiction film?

For the most part, Scorsese’s extensive filmography is grounded in the real world. The filmmaker has a clear affinity for detective stories, with the mafia in particular being at the center of several of his films. Outside of these organized crime films, Scorsese has made some amusing deviations, including Shutter Islandwhich unfolds more like a psychological thriller, Silencea slow, contemplative drama, and Hugo, an animated film suitable for children. One genre he never tackled, however, was science fiction.

Some classic Martin Scorsese films, like Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and Taxi Driver, are more violent than others, like The King of Comedy.

The “Hello Down There” commercial features a number of throwbacks to 1950s science fiction, including a shaggy barking dog, an old-fashioned diner, flying saucer-style UFOs, and a very classic alien design. While the filmmaker has never shown much interest in this type of story in his broader filmography, the the ad actually makes the case for a Scorsese alien film. One thing the director has been particularly good at in his recent projects is capturing a sense of time and place, and the 1950s would be a great era for him to bring to life next.

Unfortunately, it is it doesn’t seem very likely that Scorsese will tackle the science fiction genre in a major way beyond its new Squarespace ad. The filmmaker already has a handful of projects in the works, including a film about Jesus, another historical epic titled The bet: a story of shipwreck, mutiny and murder, and a biopic about President Theodore Roosevelt. For now, it seems like “Hello Down There” is the closest audiences get to a real Scorsese science fiction film.
