Spider-Man’s Kirsten Dunst Says Filming Iconic Kiss Was ‘Miserable’

Kirsten Dunst has opened up about her “miserable” experience filming the reverse kiss in Spider-Man.

The 2002 superhero film saw Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) locking lips with Mary Jane Watson (Dunst) in the rain while dressed in his costume and hanging from a web.

But this kiss, which went down in history as one of the most romantic moments in cinema, was not a particularly positive experience for Dunst.

During an appearance on Saturday’s episode of The Jonathan Ross Show (March 30), in which she was promoting her upcoming project Civil War, Dunst recalled filming the scene.

“I remember [the film‘s director] Sam Raimi gave me a book of famous kisses to inspire me, but he also really wanted to make it special, even though it was kind of miserable doing it,” she revealed.

“It was pouring rain, it was freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe, so it was almost like I was resurrecting him.”

Dunst previously expressed her desire to reprise the role of Mary Jane if given the same opportunity as her co-star Maguire, who appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“You know I would join this multiverse!” she said In the wings. “I feel like I’m the only one who hasn’t made it. I’m like, ‘Please sign me up. Put me in the lineup.’ I have to pay for my house and my children.”

And it wasn’t the first time she spoke about wanting to return to the role – previously revealing her regret that a once-planned fourth installment in Raimi’s series didn’t happen.

“I wanted to be in this movie so much,” she told Variety in 2017. “I loved it and wish we could have made a fourth.”
