THE System shock The remake, which first launched on PC in March last year, is officially coming to consoles in May.

Announced in a recent post to the official System shock Twitter/X account, the remake is set to launch on May 21 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox series An updated reimaging of the original System shock from 1994, the game is a science fiction action-adventure first-person shooter (FPS) game with a large emphasis on exploration and experimentation.

The action takes place on Citadel Station, a dilapidated space station that has been taken over by SHODAN – an evil AI. With almost everyone on the station transformed into hideous cyborgs, it’s up to you to fight your way through its many levels in order to shut down SHODAN. If this setup looks a little familiar, it’s probably because System shock was a great source of inspiration for Bioshock series – which developed many of its main mechanics and themes.

Although the 1994 release managed to maintain a cult following, the System shock remake rebuilt the game from the ground up with modern visuals, all-new sound effects, and a much more accessible design. It was released to critical acclaim, including widespread praise from us at TechRadar Gaming.

In our System shock remake review, we gave the game four out of five stars and highlighted its brilliant overall aesthetic and exciting combat. We also drew particular attention to SHODAN, describing the rogue AI as “one hell of a bad guy” enhanced by a superb performance from returning actor Terri Brosius.

Despite all the modernization efforts, we still found the movement and control systems a bit cumbersome. Confirmed by developer Nightdive Studios in a follow the post Twitter /The console’s control system has been “extensively tested” – so we’re optimistic that this next release can address any of these major criticisms.
