If you’re new to the franchise and looking to establish yourself in the family, it’s a good idea to make sure you watch the films in the best order.

Although you might be tempted to watch the films in the order they were released, there is some temporal trickery going on, with later films taking place before earlier films.

how to watch the Fast and Furious movies: chronological order

Although most Fast films follow one another, there is one notable exception: you guessed it, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Although it is the third Fast movie to hit theaters, Tokyo Drift actually takes place between Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7. Moving away from Brian and Dom’s story, the film follows an entirely new ensemble of characters directed by Sean Boswell. (Lucas Black), a student forced to move to Japan to avoid prison.

here are the movies in chronological order:

  1. Fast and Furious (2001)
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
  3. Fast and Furious (2009)
  4. Five Fast (2011)
  5. Fast and Furious 6 (2013)
  6. Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
  7. Furious 7 (2015)
  8. The Fate of the Furious (2017)
  9. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
  10. F9 (2021)
  11. Fast X (2023)

Tokyo Drift also marks the first appearance of Han Lue, a fan favorite who (SPOILER ALERT) appears to have been killed in a chase near the end of the film.

Fortunately, Universal decided that Han was so popular that he would be resurrected with a clever solution: all subsequent Fast films would take place Before Toyko’s drift.

This means that Han was able to return alive and well in Fast & Furious, the next film in the franchise.

Fast and Furious timeline

Just to make things even more complicated, the Fast and Furious franchise also has several high-speed prequels, sequels, and midquels. Most of these shorts were created for the DVD releases of the original films, shedding light on previously unknown areas of the saga’s timeline at high speed.

First released on the DVD of 2 Fast 2 Furious (the next film on this list), the Turbo-Charged Prelude short shows exactly how Brian (Paul Walker) went from being an LAPD cop to a criminal. The reason is what you’d expect: after helping Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) escape law enforcement, Brian himself becomes a wanted man.

Los Bandoleros, the next short, focuses on Dom and was brought to fans via a bonus DVD. No, this doesn’t explain how Brian became a full-fledged FBI agent in the next film, but introduces the audience to Han (Sung Kang), Rico (Don Omar), and Tego (Tego Calderon). Including all of these mini-movies, the Fast and Furious timeline looks like this:

  • The Fast and the Furious
  • Turbo prelude
  • 2 Fast 2 Furious
  • Bandits
  • Fast Furious
  • Fast Five
  • Fast & Furious 6
  • Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift
  • Furious 7
  • The Fate of the Furious
  • Fast & Furious Gifts: Hobbs & Shaw
  • F9
  • Fast

3. Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

With : Lucas Black, Bow Wow, Nathalie Kelley, Sung Kang, Brian Tee.

This is where things change. This one was considered a sort of “reboot” for the entire franchise. There was no Paul Walker or Diesel (apart from a minor appearance)… no Ludacris, no Michelle Rodriguez, no Gibson. Basically, no main characters here. The film was set in Japan and starred Han (Sung Kang). Luckily, fans embraced Han, but the movie confused the timeline somewhat.

4. Fast and Furious (2009)

With : Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, John Ortiz, Gal Gadot, Laz Alonso.

Not to be confused with the first film in the franchise (these titles are confusing!), this one comes fourth. Set after 2 Fast 2 Furious, we are currently ignoring The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

5. Five Rapids (2011)

With : Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Gal Gadot, with Dwayne Johnson and Matt Schulze.

The Rock first appears in Fast Five as Luke Hobbs, and we finally see Ludacris and Tyrese return to the franchise. Sung Kang also appears as Han – and Gal Gadot appears as well. The films start to ramp up and move towards the ridiculous here.

6. Fast and Furious 6 (2013)

With : Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Luke Evans, Gina Carano, John Ortiz.

We introduced a new villain, or a whole family of villains with Luke Evans as Owen Shaw. We also have a post-credits scene to introduce Jason Statham’s character, Deckard Shaw, who appears to kill Han in a scene first seen in Tokyo Drift. Now we’ve caught up – phew.

9. Fast and Furious Gifts: Hobbs and Shaw (2019)

With : Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, Cliff Curtis and Helen Mirren.

A little detour here, as it’s not really part of the main franchise, but a spin-off. The Rock and Statham return to team up against Idris Elba’s Super Soldier. Shaw goes from villain to hero. Vanessa Kirby also stars as Hattie, Statham’s sister, while Helen Mirren reprises her role as his mother after an appearance in the eighth Fast and Furious film.
