Google’s Gemini coming to iPhones in fall 2024: report

Rumors of Apple collaborating with Google have been circulating since we first heard about ChatGPT being integrated into iOS 18.

Just after WWDC 2024, Apple Senior Vice President Craig Federighi confirmed that the company wants to add more third-party AI models to Apple Intelligence.

While Federighi mentioned Google Gemini as one of the possible integrations, he did not specify when that would happen. According to Bloomberg’s Mark GurmanApple has been in contact with both Google and Anthropic, and “the former will be announced when Apple Intelligence launches this fall.”

He also didn’t rule out the possibility of an Apple Anthropic collaboration. Earlier, Apple was said to have had talks with Meta to integrate its Llama AI models; however, the deal fell through.

Gurman confirmed that the two companies had brief conversations, but “Apple has no interest in integrating Meta’s service,” he said. Apple believes that Gemini and Anthropic are much more powerful than Meta’s models.

Additionally, the collaboration with Meta contradicted Apple’s general stance on user data privacy. This would “run counter to Apple’s criticism of Meta for its privacy practices,” Gurman added.

It was impossible for two companies with opposing positions on user privacy to come together, which is why initial discussions did not lead to formal discussions.

For those unaware, Apple will allow third-party AI chatbots to handle specific user requests based on the user’s permission. So far, Apple has already integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT to infuse AI superpowers into its operating system.

The company doesn’t want to rely on a single service provider and is therefore looking to integrate Google, Anthropic, Perplexity, or all of them. This will give Apple customers more choice and variation in algorithms.

That said, Apple is also developing its internal generative AI systems, and these third-party AI services can serve as an interim solution.
