Hidden Feature: You Can Change iPhone Flashlight Radius on iOS 18

Ryan Haines / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • iOS 18 will allow control of the flashlight radius, so you can make the light wider or narrower.
  • The flashlight’s user interface is different and offers quick controls to change both intensity and radius.
  • Apple’s iOS 18 will be available to everyone this fall 2024.

Apple’s WWDC 2024 event brought many benefits, including many new features and expected AI introductions. However, the iPhone flashlight is something that doesn’t usually get a lot of attention. After all, it’s a simple feature that “just works”. You can turn it on and off. What else would you need?

Surprisingly, Apple has paid some attention to the flashlight feature this time around. Mainly, iOS 18 will allow users to change the flashlight button on the lock screen, helping people avoid turning it on by accident. We did, however, find a little extra feature that Apple didn’t mention during the event!

The iOS 18 developer beta software became available shortly after the event and we tested it. After some research, we discovered that there was an unmentioned new feature in the flashlight. We have been able to control the intensity of the flashlight for a long time, and with iOS 18 we were also able to control the radius of the light. This means that you will be able to change the width or narrowness of the light direction.

As you can see, the user interface is different and you now have two sliders to control both the intensity and the radius of the light.

This is quite interesting, because it’s a feature we haven’t seen on any Android phone yet. The beta version of iOS 18 arrives in August and the final version is planned for this fall 2024. You will have to wait until then to benefit from this improvement. For now, you can check if your iPhone will receive iOS 18 here.
