TL;DR

  • The upcoming AI features in iOS 18 would not be as powerful as those offered by some competing companies.
  • Apple could take a hybrid approach to its AI offerings, including on-device processing, its own cloud solutions and third-party partnerships.
  • The company is concerned that iPhone users will ignore its new AI features and not use them at all.

When Apple introduces new iPhone features, it usually includes innovations that build on existing ideas from its competitors. However, the case for iOS 18’s AI offerings may be different as the company is lagging behind and might fail to impress power users. While Apple’s AI approach may be more private, it apparently won’t be superior.

According to BloombergApple is concerned that users will reject its upcoming AI features in iOS 18. The company is reportedly playing catch-up with the likes of Google and OpenAI, and its in-house AI offerings may not be as impressive.

With iOS 18, Apple will potentially take a hybrid approach to its AI features. The device’s built-in neural engine could handle offline tasks, while the company’s cloud solutions could be reserved for more demanding demands.

It is worth noting, however, that Apple is reportedly refraining from introducing its own AI chatbot in this release as it is concerned about its effectiveness and reputation. Instead, it could offer a ChatGPT-powered chatbot to iPhone users through its partnership with OpenAI.

Beyond that, iOS 18 could improve Siri’s functionality by making it more convenient and conversational. Users can also expect to see features like smart notification summaries, quick summary of news articles, basic AI photo editing, audio recording transcriptions, enhanced calendar autofill, And much more.

Apple is set to preview iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11 at WWDC24. During the keynote on June 10, we expect an official list of AI features that will be available on the company’s platforms later this year.
