How to change your password in ChatGPT

You can’t be too careful on today’s Internet, and regularly updating passwords for your most visited sites is a great way to protect your personal information online. This is especially true when using generative AI programs like ChatGPT, whether you share your account with a friend, or simply want greater peace of mind.

The ChatGPT website security feature works a little differently than what you are used to. For example, if you click the user icon in the upper right corner of the ChatGPT home screen and select Settings, then Security, you won’t find an option to actively reset your password.

You will, however, find an option to enable two-factor authentication, which you should definitely switch back to as soon as you finish resetting your password. But first, let’s log out.

Step 1: To log out of ChatGPT, click on the user icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select Sign out. The system may display a screen asking if you want to reconnect or stay disconnected. If so, choose the latter option.

2nd step: Now log in again. Once you log out of the system, the ChatGPT page will display a pair of radio buttons in the lower left corner of the screen, one for logging in, the other for registering. Choose the first option.

Step 3: Manually enter your email address and select Forgot your password. The login screen will give you the option to manually enter a password or select a radio button to Continue with your existing Google, Microsoft or Apple accounts and access them through them. Even if you’ve already linked one of these accounts and are using your Gmail, Microsoft, or Apple email address to sign in, enter it in the field and select Continuethen select the Forgot your password link.

Step 4: Enter your email address to send you a password reset link. On the *Reset your password** screen, simply enter your email address in the field and tap *Continue*. The system will send a password reset link to that account (be sure to check your spam folder if it doesn’t appear in a few minutes).

Step 5: Select the link in this email to access a new Reset your password page, where you will enter and re-enter your new password. Just make sure it’s at least 12 characters long, or better yet, get a password manager like LastPass or OnePass and have it generate secure passwords on your behalf.

Step 6: Log in again using your new credentials. Once you have updated your password, follow the link to the ChatGPT home page and select To log in, either from the context menu or by using the link at the bottom left as you did in step 2. That’s it. That’s all you have to do. Good conversation.

Can I change my ChatGPT account email address in the same way?

While you can easily change your account password, the same cannot be said for the email address associated with it. According to the OpenAI help page, “We do not support updating the email address associated with your ChatGPT/OpenAI account.”

In short, if you want your ChatGPT account to use a different email address than the one you already use, you will need to sign up for a new ChatGPT account. Additionally, the company doesn’t offer any way to transfer your existing chat data to this new account, so any conversations you’ve had so far will be left behind.
