May 7 marks the final milestone in the trifecta of Apple products that began in fall 2023. After receiving new iPhones, new Apple Watches, and new MacBooks, only one major category of Apple products was ready for a refresh this spring. And Apple hasn’t just pulled out all the stops with a new iPad Pro And Air, but with the accessory that powers the entire iPad experience: the Apple Pencil.

After almost a decade of existence, the Apple Pencil has finally been introduced to Apple’s “Pro” club. Rather than the one or two small tweaks of past Apple Pencil upgrades, the Apple Pencil Pro has been completely redesigned with a suite of new ways to bring ideas to life – and keep pace with that M4 chip. It won’t ship until May 15, but you can pre-order it now through the Apple Store and B&H Photo.

A light press of the Pencil Pro brings up a palette to quickly switch between tools, line weights and colors, while a slight rotation while holding the Pencil Pro activates the barrel roll: a built-in gyroscope that responds immediately to intuitive and precise control of pen shapes, brush tips or animation movements. Personalized interactions can also be scheduled.

Controlling your project goes even further with a hover feature that lets you target actions without even touching the screen, like previewing a line before it’s drawn or switching between a layer stack in Final Cut Pro without making any false movements. Haptic feedback has also been improved to alert you when a new layer is actually perfectly in the middle.

As always, Apple Pencil Pro charges and stores magnetically on the side of your iPad. If it falls out in transit, don’t worry: it’s the first Apple Pencil to support Find My.

Although “Pro” is added to the name, Apple does not control the Apple Pencil Pro only for iPad Pro users. iPad Air users can also choose to experience the magic of the Pro. And there’s no reason not to make that difference: Despite so many revolutionary changes, the Apple Pencil Pro costs $129, the same starting price as the second-generation Apple Pencil from several years ago .
