Julie Andrews gives update on Princess Diaries 3

But Andrews has now thrown cold water on that prospect, clarifying during an appearance on America’s Today show that to his knowledge, there are no current plans in place for a new film.

“It’s been quite a while now since both journals were finished, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s better to leave a good thing alone,” she said.

“I don’t like it when people deal and deal with it and deal with it, you know, until it’s dead.”

The Mary Poppins star said there had been “dialogue” about a third film, but added that “nothing had been achieved”.

She added: “I think I might be wrong, but I think it’s been put aside now – I can’t be sure.”

Andrews starred as Queen Regent Clarisse Renaldi in the previous two films, which saw Anne Hathaway take on the title role of Mia Thermopolis in her very first film credit.

The original film was released in 2001 and followed Mia after her shocking discovery that she was the heir to the throne of a fictional European nation called Genovia with a sequel in 2004 after very strong box office performance.

When reports surfaced of a potential third film, it was claimed that it would be a continuation of Mia’s Thermopolis story, rather than a reboot of the franchise, based on Princess Diaries novels by Meg Cabot.

Unfortunately for fans, it looks like that won’t be happening anytime soon based on Andrews’ comments – but we can’t definitively rule out a third movie somewhere down the line, so keep your fingers crossed.
