Larian CEO says studio is done with Baldur’s Gate 3 to focus on something new

Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the most successful and critically acclaimed games of 2023, with many hailing it as one of the best role-playing games ever made. However, if you were hoping for the game to get an expansion or sequel, that won’t be the case – at least not from its developer, Larian Studios.

As reported PC gamer, Larian CEO Swen Vincke said today during a speech at GDC that the studio is done with Baldur’s Gate 3. That means there will be no expansions and there will be no expansions. will not make Baldur’s Gate 4. “We are a company of big ideas. “We are not a company created to create DLC or expansions,” Vincke said. “Actually, we have tried this several times. It failed every time. It’s not our thing. Life is too short. Our ambitions are very great.”

Not only that, but the studio is moving away from Dungeons & Dragons in general, with Vincke saying that “it will be up to Wizards of the Coast, because it’s their IP, to find someone to take up the mantle.”

Although Vincke says Larian is proud of what he’s accomplished, the studio wants to focus on a completely new project. It’s unclear what Larian might tackle next; Given that it directed Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Divinity series, it’s hard to imagine the studio not making another RPG. We’ll have to wait and see.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released last August after a long Early Access period and rave reviews, including several game of the Year wins. While it’s disappointing to see no significant updates to the title’s story, we can’t wait to see what Larian has in store next.
