Madame Web has it all wrong with the SSU

Despite only having four films under its belt so far, the SSU remains one of the worst-performing superhero franchises currently on screen, with Madame Web marking an all-time low for this. Starting with Venomwhich proved to be a surprise box office success, its subsequent sequel and the Jared Leto-led film Morbius garnered mixed to largely negative reviews, with the Johnson-directed film continuing this unfortunate trend. While the first two Venom the films were generally considered successes at the box office and with audiences for Tom Hardy’s committed and zany performance as Eddie Brock, Morbius And Madame Web collapsed. Critics have largely pointed to their scattered plots and lackluster scripts as the films’ biggest problems, and audiences’ general superhero weariness hasn’t helped their box offices at all. The franchise’s ultimate problem, as the new one highlights Pitch meeting episode, it is his desire to set up a superhero universe with very vague links with Spider-Man.

The main reason behind the existence of the SSU is that Sony still owns the rights to the webslinger and all adjacent characters, thus allowing films like Madame Web be separated from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The problem, however, is that many of these characters aren’t household names and barely register with hardcore comic book fans, making it difficult for Sony to generate interest in the franchise without having Spider-Man really present. If the studio continues to move forward with these projects without ultimately introducing a new or previously seen version of the Marvel hero into the universe, the SSU is ultimately doomed to failure.
