Zack Snyder Reveals Tom Cruise Researched the Role of a Certain Key Guardians character. The film has a 65% critic and 71% audience rating on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. Guardians was also considered a box office failure, grossing only $185 million, but its crude tone helped shape the future of superhero films.

In an interview with Happy Sad Confused, Guardians director Snyder revealed Cruise wanted to play Rorschach. The reveal comes just after Snyder said he wanted Cruise to play Ozymandias. The reveal conversation is brief, but Snyder said Cruise was capable of playing the dark and complex character of Rorschach, only for the filmmaker to have already cast Jackie Earle Haley. Check out what Snyder shared in the quotes and video below:

Zack Snyder: I wanted Tom Cruise for Ozymandias. Tom wanted to play Rorschach.

Josh Horowitz: Tom wanted to play Rorschach?

Zack Snyder: He wanted to play Rorschach, which, I mean obviously, he could have done. Yeah. But we already had Jackie and Jackie is amazing! I mean, but I definitely would have thought of Tom in retrospect if I didn’t have Jackie.

Horowitz: So you meet Tom, and you call yourself “Ozymandias.” He says, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want to play this weird, crazy guy.”

Snyder: Which would have been amazing, in retrospect, yeah.

Cruise’s ambition and commitment would have produced an interesting Rorschach

Although Cruise isn’t known for playing characters like Rorschach, the actor’s ambition and commitment to his roles may have resulted in an interesting portrayal of the character.

The world of Guardians is one filled with anti-heroes. Cruise playing Rorschach would have been an interesting choice, as the actor is best known for playing characters who are clearly heroes, like Impossible missionIs it Ethan Hunt or Top GunIt’s Maverick. By taking on the role of Rorschach, he may have produced a dark, morally complex character that Cruise is not well known for.

Whether in his action-oriented work or in some of his more dramatic films, like Born July 4, the four-time Oscar nominee has often demonstrated the determination to dedicate himself fully to his roles. Recent payments of Impossible mission are prime examples of this, as Cruise chose to perform most of his own stunts, many of which are incredibly dangerous.

The Mission: Impossible series is Tom Cruise’s ship that seems to fulfill some kind of death wish, and it couldn’t be more entertaining.

Given that Rorschach was one of the most action-packed characters in Snyder’s film. Guardians With his various vigilante jobs and brutal prison escape with the help of Nite Owl II and Silk Specter II, Cruise could have leaned into the stunts he has now become known for with the 2009 film. That being said, It could also be argued that the star’s lack of major villainous roles throughout his career could have made his role as Ozymandias just as intriguing. While the film may not have been widely acclaimed, Haley’s performance remains remarkable, ensuring that Snyder ultimately made the right choice.

Guardians

In 1986, DC Comics published a limited comic book series consisting of 12 issues titled Guardians. Creator Alan Moore worked with artist Dave Gibbons for the project, which published monthly issues from 1986 to 1985. A film adaptation was released in March 2009 under the direction of Zack Snyder. The story of Guardians takes place in an alternate reality of 1985, with references to events in the 1940s and 1960s. In the past, a group of costumed crime fighters called the Minutemen went down in history as having contributed to the many victories won by the United States. In the history of the series, the United States won the Vietnam War and no Watergate scandal occurred. At present (1985), a Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union threatens to escalate into nuclear war. One of the retired superheroes, The Comedia, aka Agent Edward Blake (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), is murdered and the investigation leads to the discovery of a plot that brings other heroes out of retirement . Other heroes include Jon Osterman/Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Sally Jupiter/Silk Specter (Carla Gugino), and Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). In 2015, news that HBO was working on a television series for Guardians began to surface with early reports indicating that Snyder would also direct the television adaptation. In mid-2017, news broke that Snyder would be replaced by Damon Lindelof, co-creator and showrunner of Lost. As of this writing, Lindelof has neither denied nor confirmed his involvement in the project, but he has expressed his desire to be a part of it and that he wants a comic-book-like adaptation.
