Samsung was the only major manufacturer to make foldable phones widely available in North America for years, and that only recently changed with the emergence of Google and OnePlus last year. Calling the industry competitive may not be entirely true. OnePlus reportedly has no plans to release a OnePlus Open successor in the near future, and the Google Pixel Fold is still a flawed device. Then there’s Samsung, a company that seems to be resting on its laurels with the Z Fold and Z Flip brands.

In this context, it makes sense that other brands are overtaking Samsung in terms of foldable product shipments and growth. For the first time, Huawei is the leader, which may shock North American users. Foreign brands are not only winning in China. Companies like Honor and Motorola are seeing success in other regions. All this will put a lot of pressure on brands working in the North American market to improve, especially Samsung with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 series.

The foldable shipment figures for Q1 2023 and Q1 2024, provided by Counterpoint, paint two completely different pictures. Last year, Samsung dominated the first quarter, accounting for 58% of all foldable phone shipments worldwide. This is important to remember because Samsung’s slowdown in Q1 2024 cannot be attributed to the Z Fold and Z Flip release cycles. Samsung was the first to really make foldable phones mainstream, and it has been the foldable market leader since the beginning.
