What do you want to know

  • A report claims that Samsung wants to increase the thickness of the Flip 6’s UTG (ultra-thin glass) to help reduce the crease appearance of its display.
  • In doing so, rumors suggest that this would help with the durability of the device’s screen.
  • The report adds that Samsung could continue this trend for the Flip 7, increasing its UTG thickness even further and developing a new hinge to support it.

There is a rumor circulating around Samsung’s upcoming foldable clamshell, which could solve the boring side of these unique devices.

According to The Elect (Korean), Samsung is reportedly considering increasing the thickness of UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 (via SamMobile). It is reported that the thickness will increase to around 50 micrometers, compared to 30 on the Flip 5. It is suggested that this could reduce the crease definition of the device’s screen.

Additionally, increasing the thickness of the Flip 6’s UTG could also help with the screen’s durability.

The report adds that Samsung could stick with the same waterdrop-style hinge used on the Flip 5 for the Flip 6. The company has already tested the hinge to withstand nearly 200,000 bends, and the hardware has been designed to help reduce the dreaded screen crease.

However, the Korean publication indicates that a redesigned hinge and UTG could arrive for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 in 2025.

It is said that the Flip 7’s new UTG could become “even thicker” to further reduce the appearance of the screen crease. To do this, Samsung will supposedly have to rearrange the hinge structure of the clamshell to accommodate the thickness of the UTG. Samsung will likely upgrade its waterdrop hinge, but we’ll have to wait and see to know for sure.

With improvements announced for the internal screen, previous rumors suggest that its cover screen could also benefit. Back in March, there was speculation that Samsung could increase the Flip 6’s screen refresh rate to 120Hz. A bit more memory could be coming, with rumors suggesting 12GB of RAM.

Elsewhere, the Flip 6 is rumored to feature a larger battery, which could total 4.00 mAh. The following theories don’t excite us, as the device could still boast the same boring 25W charging speeds as its 2023 predecessor.

Samsung is expected to drop its next wave of foldable and other devices later this year. It is currently suspected that the company could do it even earlier this year, on July 10 in Paris, France.
