Glastonbury festival attendees are helping pee this year

Glastonbury, the major British festival held almost every year since 1970, will provide liters of urine to a start-up which has found an interesting use for it.

NPK Recovery uses its technology to recycle festival-goers’ pee into environmentally friendly fertilizer. This is being done in partnership with Peequal, Glastonbury’s female toilet supplier. Once everything is collected after the festival, NPK Labs will receive it for processing.

This is not the first time urine has been used in this way at the festival. With so many people, in 2019, they were able technology/99801/glastonbury-music-festival-display-screens-powered-pee#:~:text=At%20peak%20times%2C%20it%20is,energy%20as%20a%20by%2Dproduct.”>power the screens on the Pyramid stage with a special urinal. We also previously reported that NASA was recycling astronauts’ pee into drinking water.

NPK Recovery spoke with The temperature about the £72,000 ($91,027.44) grant Peequal acquired to enable the project to move forward.

Glastonbury, despite its sanitary size, remains a festival in the United Kingdom. This means that God knows what is ingested and filtered out of the body.

The register pointed a finger BBC Report 2021who claimed that the water near the festival was contaminated with MDMA. The BBC report said a test in the river revealed four times as much MDMA a week after the festival.

Acknowledging the task ahead, NPK founder Hannah Van Den Bergh said this was almost a “worst case scenario” for the process:

“We almost use Glastonbury as a sort of ‘worst case scenario’ urine. If we can clean that up, then we can basically accept anything passing through our system.

NPK also noted that it is still difficult to sell urine fertilizers to compete with other cheaper options. However, she hopes this will be a step forward in the agricultural fertilizer market.

Glastonbury is about to it’s coming this weekend, with thousands of people ready to attend. Although there is no broadcast in the US according to Newsweek, if you jump through a few hoops you can watch it via BBC iPlayer.
