TL;DR
- Google is widely rolling out a visible directions feature for the Maps app.

Google Maps is about to get a lot more useful on your lock screen. The app is getting a new setting called “Directions visible while navigating”.
In February 2023, Google announcement the Maps app on Android and iOS would benefit from a visible directions feature. This feature would allow Android owners to see who to turn to, as well as get live ETAs from the lock screen. This also works on the route preview screen, even if you don’t press Start. Meanwhile, Google Maps on iPhone is said to use iOS Live Activities for this feature.
The feature was supposed to launch globally in June 2023, but was perhaps only available to a small group of users. But it seems that it is now accessible to everyone.
First spotted by Android Font, the feature now appears to be widely rolling out to users of version 11.116 for Android and 6.104.2 on iOS. I can also confirm that my own device now has a toggle for the setting which you can see below.

The toggle is off by default, so you’ll need to enable the setting. This can be done by going to Settings and scrolling through the browsing settings. You should find visible directions when navigating just below the map display.
