What do you want to know

  • Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones are facing display stuttering issues dating back to October 2023.
  • Now, Google has updated the Issue Tracker listing related to the issue, marking it as “resolved.”
  • But the actual fix won’t be available until Android 15 is publicly released, which will take several months.

A long-standing Pixel bug finally has a resolution in sight, at least according to Google. The company has updated a Issue Tracking Report on March 26 regarding display stuttering issues on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users (via Android Font). Google marked the issue as “resolved,” but there is a huge problem with that designation. The patch won’t actually roll out to Pixel 8 series device owners until Android 15 is publicly available, and that won’t be for several months.

“Continued performance and power optimizations are planned for the next version of Android,” a Google employee wrote in an Issue Tracker comment. “These include improvements that positively impact the entire system user interface as well as use cases related to certain Android applications.”

This timeline means Pixel 8 users will have to wait even longer for a proper patch, as Android 15 is likely to be released in late summer or fall. It could take Google a full year to resolve this issue, given that the first report in this Issue Tracker thread was published on October 14, 2023.

Users continued to post comments in the thread, with over 100 comments posted in total. Pixel 8 owners have reported screen stuttering in some first-party systems and apps, like the Google Play Store. Others have also noticed anomalies in third-party apps, such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).

In the days after Google first marked the issues as resolved, Pixel 8 users flooded the Issue Tracker thread with commenters explaining their displeasure. One user called the fixed designation a “bad joke” and said it showed that “Google can’t fix the problem or isn’t taking it seriously.”

“If we really have to wait until August or later for this to be resolved… well, that will seriously impact my choice the next time I buy a smartphone,” another Pixel 8 user wrote.

How long it took Google to resolve this issue is also considered in light of Google’s promise of seven years of software support. Apparently, the company is still struggling to resolve issues in a timely manner.
