Extreme E, the premium off-road electric vehicle racing series, is turning to hydrogen. The series announced this week that it would be changing its name to and unveiled a hydrogen-powered race car it calls the Pioneer 25 to kick off the transition. The first season is set to kick off in April 2025 in Saudi Arabia, before heading to the UK, Germany, Italy and concluding in the US.

Extreme E, which puts electric off-road vehicles through their paces in (as you might expect) extreme environments, such as the desert. It has brought in some great teams. This year marks the fourth season of Extreme E. Commenting on the shift to hydrogen, founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said the shift “is not just about electric mobility; it’s about creating green energy solutions that can be applied anywhere, from remote locations to bustling cities.”

“By launching Extreme H, we are not only demonstrating the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source, but also testing the broader hydrogen ecosystem, including hydrogen charging and transportation, and contributing also to create a market for it,” Agag wrote. Pioneer 25, Extreme H’s flagship race car, is powered by a 75 kW hydrogen fuel cell.
