Love Lies Bleeding Director Almost Made the Ending Completely Different

The film, which is released in UK cinemas today (May 3), follows lovers Lou (Kristen Stewart) and Jackie (Katy O’Brian) as they embark on a wild journey filled with death and blood as they head to a bodybuilding competition. in Las Vegas.

The film takes a big visual turn in the final act as Jackie undergoes a huge (and we mean monster-sized) transformation, saves the day, and runs off into the sunset with Lou.

And while this epic visual epic might be one of the talking points of Love Lies Bleeding, director Glass revealed that she almost kept the final act “very grounded and realistic.”

“I think, like with St Maud, I got the ending quite early and then a lot of it is about finding the way to it,” she exclusively told RadioTimes.com .

“So we had a version where this actually happened. Because I think for me and Veronica, my co-writer, what happened felt like a very natural progression of the story before it.

She continued: “It seemed very natural, and then at one point we got cold feet. So we wrote versions where we kept them very grounded and in the real world, and basically the same kind of dynamic was playing out, but just in a very literal way, and it always felt like a little escape, and in a way sort. unsatisfactory.

O’Brian added that she couldn’t believe it when she first read the scene.

Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian as Jackie in Love Lies Bleeding.

“Yeah, when I was reading the script, after Kristen threw up, I thought nothing would surprise me, and then I read that I was 50 feet tall, or whatever, and I was like ‘what the hell? ‘is?'” she said.

“It took me a while to sit down and really think about it and I think after the discussions with Rose she said ‘see what you want, but also have fun with it’.”

Speaking about her interpretation of the scene, she added: “And I think it was this self-realization in a weird way. Initially I was supposed to be naked and luckily they decided to put me in bikini and to make myself look like I wanted to look on stage, as if I had won. This is what informed me: I had achieved what I wanted to achieve and it was not slight fame thanks to the. bodybuilding, it basically meant saving the love of my life.”

The actor also recalled initially finding the scene “silly and awkward” to film, explaining: “It was super fun. The annoying thing was that it was fake, so I couldn’t get Ed back.

“It would be really cool if I could have grown 50 feet taller. It was a little weird to film, but fun to watch. Filming, I’m like alone and there’s like emptiness behind me and a bunch of sets that they I sort of shaped to resemble, height-wise, the place I’m supposed to be, and then I play with dolls and pick them up and put them down.

“So it was very silly and awkward to film. But watching it, it was great.”

Love Lies Bleeding will arrive in UK cinemas on Friday May 3, 2024.
