Megalopolis release date speculation: Cast and trailer for Coppola’s epic

The director had the idea for the film nearly half a century ago, in 1977, and has been hoping to make it ever since, with development stopping and restarting several times in the years since.

In fact, Coppola was so determined to make the film that he chose to bypass traditional Hollywood financing methods and invest $120 million of his own money so he could deliver his own vision, without compromise.

Even with a synopsis available and a stunning trailer released, it’s hard to know exactly what to expect from the film – but based on early reactions that emerged at a private screening earlier in 2024, it seems that the mad director has concocted something ambitious, epic and very, very unconventional.

There will also be major roles for Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel and Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza – and that’s just scratching the surface of the cast list.

Also slated for prominent roles are Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman. Talk about stars!

Megalopolis land

If early reactions from the aforementioned industry review are to be believed, the plot won’t be straightforward – but we do know that Driver will play the role of an idealistic architect called Cesar, who has a unique ability to control the weather.

An official synopsis reads: “An accident destroys a declining metropolis similar to New York. Cesar Catilina, an idealistic architect with the power to control time, aims to rebuild the city into a lasting utopia, but faces opposition from corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo.

“Torn between them is Franklyn’s worldly daughter, Julia, who, tired of the influence she has inherited, searches for the meaning of her life.”

Megalopolis Trailer

After releasing a brief clip featuring Driver in early May, a slightly more extensive trailer was released on Tuesday, May 14 – and it certainly gives the film a delightful and extremely eccentric perspective.

Coppola himself did not hesitate to announce it, calling the project “the best work I have ever had the privilege of presiding over.”
