Meta Quest’s Horizon OS is opening up to third parties – and Xbox is among the first to get on board

Meta has announced a partnership with several manufacturers to bring to market a variety of new, limited-edition mixed reality headsets.

As reported VGCone of those partners is Microsoft, which will work with Meta to develop a limited edition Meta Quest device potentially similar to Meta Quest 3, one of our picks for the best VR headsets.

An official Metablog post confirmed the following: “Xbox and Meta teamed up last year to integrate Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) with Meta Quest, allowing people to play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality. Now, we’re working together again to create a limited edition, Xbox-inspired Meta Quest.

While Meta is remaining tight-lipped about the nature of this limited-edition, Xbox-inspired Meta Quest device, it’s leaning more toward the decision to expand its Horizon operating system, so to speak. He explains that: “Meta Horizon OS will continue to give users more choices in how to access applications.

“Since we don’t limit users to titles from our own app store, there are multiple ways to access quality content on Meta Horizon OS, including popular gaming services like Xbox game Pass Ultimate, or through Steam Link or our Air Link system for wireless streaming of PC software to headsets In the post, Meta also encourages Google to bring its Play Store to Quest devices.

Meta also affects other manufacturers with whom it partners. He confirms that Asus ROG will develop “an all-new performance gaming headset.” Meanwhile, Lenovo is set to “develop mixed reality devices for productivity, learning and entertainment.” Both will use Meta Horizon OS to create these devices.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg developed these partnerships in an Instagram postperhaps teasing that the limited edition Xbox-branded Quest headset might actually be quite simple, stating that it could be “just a plug-and-play version with Xbox controllers and game Pass so you can Immediately start playing on a big screen wherever you go.
