OLED displays could be coming to the MacBook Pro sooner rather than later

The new iPad Pro is Apple’s first big-screen device to use OLED technology, but. According to a new report, the rest of Apple’s high-end big-screen devices won’t be far behind. According to market analyst Omdia, it is “very likely” that Apple will replace the MacBook Pro’s mini-LED screens with OLED screens as early as 2026.

The report explains that Apple is a key contributor to the growth in demand for OLED displays, fueled by the production of the new iPad Pro. However, even though the iPad Air and iPad mini will eventually receive OLED displays, Omdia claims that the increase in demand is not limited to iPads and iPhones and extends to other Apple devices as well:

Apple is very likely to integrate OLED into its MacBook Pro models as early as 2026. The move could trigger a significant increase in demand for OLED in the laptop market, potentially reaching over 60 million units of here 2031.

The Omdia report is based on industry trends, so Omdia’s forecasts are unlikely to take into account information provided by Apple itself. Additionally, no details are provided, so for example, it is unclear whether Apple will use the Tandem OLED implementation it uses with the iPad Pro, although it seems likely, since Tandem OLED is used to generate the brightness desired by Apple for its professional products.

Omdia’s report focuses only on OLEDs, but we can’t help but wonder which chip the 2026 MacBook Pro will have. Recent reports have indicated that Apple plans to introduce the MacBook Pro M4 later this year or in early 2025, but after that, Apple’s cycle is not known. The 2026 MacBook Pro could have an M5 if the M4 arrives later than expected or if Apple decides to extend the cycle after the M4 release. Or it could have an M6 if Apple normalized the cycle with annual chip releases.

Regardless, it’s likely that Apple will raise the price of the MacBook Pro when OLED arrives, as it did with the iPad Pro.
