  • The next Galaxy Z Fold 6 would have two versions: a high-end model and a “budget” model.

  • It could also be much thinner, according to another report.

Samsung is preparing the first “budget” version of its Galaxy Z Fold series, according to ET News. To lower the price, the tech company reportedly dropped a key feature.

As it stands, Samsung is currently developing two models of the flagship Galaxy Z Fold series. The first model will be a traditional handset in the vein of the currently available Galaxy Z Fold 5, but with new features. Where things get interesting is that, according to the report, the “budget” model will not have pen input functionality. The premium model will retain this feature, but the “budget” model will drop this feature in an effort to lower the price for consumers.

It’s important to note that the lack of parity between the two models doesn’t stop at pen input functionality. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants added to X (formerly known as Twitter) that the phone could be thinner because “the digitizer is thick”.

It remains to be seen how the price of the “budget” model will be managed. Currently, the base Galaxy Z Fold 5 retails for an MSRP of $1,799.99 for the 256GB model. Pricing extends up to $2,159.99 for the 1TB storage version – the greater amount of storage available. With that in mind, the low-end model would cost considerably less, although it remains to be seen how much cheaper it will be.

Nonetheless, this development continues a recent trend by the tech giant of introducing lower-end models of its flagship devices, dubbed FE or Fan Edition, which are much more attractive to consumers due to of their lower cost. In exchange for a lower cost, some features are removed. However, as Android Central’s Jay Bonggolto reported earlier this month, the Galaxy S24 FE could come surprisingly close to the flagship model’s performance.

Features of the S24 FE include a much larger battery (4,500 mAh) compared to the Galaxy S24’s 4,000 mAh battery, as well as a 6.1-inch AMOLED powered by an Exynos 2400 or Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset 3. The end result is a device that is extremely comparable to the flagship model without the hefty price tag.

This should give some relief to consumers in that while the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE lacks pen input functionality and potentially a thinner screen, it will still retain just as many highlights in a much friendlier price .
