While a sequel script is reportedly in the works shortly after the first film‘s release, Jon Hamm has an uncertain update on Confess, Fletch 2. The 2022 film served as a reboot of the Chevy Chase-led comedy franchise, bringing a new take to Gregory Mcdonald’s books and following Hamm’s titular investigative reporter as he finds himself thrust into a web of conspiracy in which he is accused of murder while searching for the paintings. stolen from his girlfriend’s family collection. Co-written and directed by Greg Mottola, the film received rave reviews from critics for its stylish and fresh approach to the material.

In a recent interview with Rant screen for the Grimsburg season 1 finale, Hamm was asked to provide an update on Confess, Fletch following. Although the Emmy and Golden Globe winner, who was also a producer on the first film, confirmed that Mottola had completed the script for the follow-up, which will be based on the third book in the series, Fletch’s fortune, he said studio shakeups at Miramax and Paramount have left them uncertain. However, he reassured that he and Mottola were “Ready to go“Should we give them the opportunity, especially since Hamm is”such a fan” books. Check out what Hamm said below:

Jon Hamm: We have a script, I don’t really have a lot of details on it. The next storyline would be the next book in the series, which is Fletch’s Fortune, and it’s sort of set in the world of journalism, which is very interesting, I think, and oddly timely given that the book was written in the ’70s, and it’s somehow even more relevant now. But the problem is that Miramax has been bought and sold, who owns the rights, so we’re kind of waiting to see how that develops. Regarding the situation at Paramount, I think everyone is also waiting to see what happens with Paramount. [Chuckles]

So there’s a corporate storyline that we’re kind of waiting to see where the dust settles, but we’re ready to tackle the next chapter as soon as possible. I loved playing the role, Greg loved writing it, and I thought what we did with it was fun and funny. I actually ran into Chevy Chase at the airport, which was lovely, and he couldn’t have been nicer. Our stated goal was not to try to remake the Chevrolet version of Fletch, we really wanted to make it our own and give it its own tone and its own sensibility, and I think we did that, and people there really responded.

But the commercial aspect was not as successful as we hoped, but this is also a rather strange fact in the new media landscape. And in a way, the measure of success in cinema is now completely different. People, from my friends to my former students, to President Obama and David Zaslav, have told me how much they love the film. [Chuckles]

So it really resonated with people, and I think people appreciated it. So I’m hoping we can start the engine for the next one as soon as possible and keep them coming, because I’ve been a huge fan of the books for so long and I was really excited to have the chance to put my own spin on it . on it, and I really loved doing it.

Will a Confess Fletch sequel ever happen?

Hamm’s point about the filmcommercial aspect“The difficulties seem to indicate that Confess, FletchThe film‘s underperformance at the box office, where it grossed just under $657,000 against its $20 million production budget. While this pales in comparison to the two Chase-led films, the 2022 reboot not only overshadowed them by critics, but also failed to get the same theatrical release as both, having only been released in 516 theaters during its opening weekend. before decreasing in the following weeks. Although the film‘s mediocre box office performance leaves some uncertainty about its chances, the long road to Confess, Fletch taking off in the first place could hold promise for a potential sequel. Reboot attempts had dragged on for nearly two decades, with Jason Sudeikis having been attached for a few years before Hamm came on board. Although Hamm’s also took several years to come to fruition, his and Mottola’s vision was clearly the right one according to critics’ response to the film.

It is interesting to note that Hamm was so passionate about Confess, Fletch that he gave up about 60% of his salary for the film in order to secure a few extra days of filming with Mottola. While it seems unlikely the duo will do the same in a potential sequel, this devotion to McDonald’s adaptations could be just what’s needed to keep studios interested in making another installment, particularly if it were featuring a wide-scale theatrical release in comparison to the limited one that the first film saw.
