Square Enix has apparently canceled some games in an effort to be “more selective and focused”

Square Enix, the company behind last year’s Final Fantasy XVI and this year’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has apparently canceled some games in development, suffering heavy losses in the process. As for why, the company aims to be more selective about its plans in the future.

This news comes from a release related to Square Enix’s holdings, which explains why the company suffered losses of 22.1 billion yen, or approximately $140 million, in its financial accounts for the fiscal year ending in March.

“At the meeting convened on March 27, 2024, the Board of Directors of Square Enix Holdings voted, in light of the multiple changes underway in its group’s environment, to review the group’s approach to development of high definition (HD) games with the intention of being more selective and targeted in the allocation of development resources,” the press release said. “Following a thorough review, the company expects to record approximately ¥22.1 billion in content abandonment losses on its books for the fiscal year ending March 2024.”

While potentially canceled games may seem pessimistic, it appears that Square Enix is focusing more on development to ensure that the games it releases are hits or, at the very least, a financial success for the company. Nonetheless, it appears that around $140 million worth of games in development have been canceled and it’s unlikely we’ll ever know what that is.

This release follows the great success of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, released by Square Enix in February. Elsewhere in 2024, Square Enix is releasing Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, the MMO’s new expansion that will kick off a new saga for the long-running game, in July.
