While the role of Superman had previously been played by Henry Cavill, who first played the role in 2013’s Man of Steel, the star will not return for Gunn’s film.

Instead, David Corenswet (The Politician) will appear in the title role.

After some back and forth as DC changed its plans for its cinematic universe, Cavill posted on Instagram to say, “I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. After all, I’m not coming back as Superman.

“After being informed by the studio to announce my return in October, before they were hired, this news is not the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build.”

Meanwhile, Gunn said Twitter (now X): “In the early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
