What do you want to know

  • The Google Pixel 10 series will likely be powered by Tensor chips made by TSMC and not Samsung.
  • New database information obtained by Android Authority apparently confirms the Tensor G5 (codenamed Laguna) chipset makers.
  • Additionally, the Pixel 10 series could finally have 16GB of RAM.

While the Pixel 9 is Google’s next anticipated series, new information is already giving interesting details about the Pixel 10 successor series, particularly the chipset that will power these models.

Google was rumored to be ditching Samsung in favor of its in-house developed Tensor G5 chip, which likely powers the Pixel 10 series. However, new findings from Android Authority indicate that TSMC will produce the next Tensor G5 chip and not Samsung.

The publication obtained publicly available commercial databases that add evidence to previously predicted rumors. The databases indicate the companies that ordered the goods – Google (as sender) and Tessolve Semiconductor (as recipient) are mentioned – and the description of the goods gives us some additional details.

The detailed description by the publication reveals the Google part number, chip codename “laguna (LGA)”, product type, packaging type, manufacturer and the number of tests passed by the mentioned chipset . TSMC is obviously mentioned as the manufacturer, and the packaging technology is InFO POP, which is said to be associated exclusively with TSMC.

As the Android Authority report notes, the other metrics mentioned indicate that Google is still testing the new chip and it should be at least 16 months before the official release, which is in line with the Pixel 10 lineup. Data further mentions 16GB RAM capacity, which is an interesting detail to look forward to as it is a significant increase over the current model’s RAM capacity.

For the uninitiated, current Tensor chips, including the upcoming Tensor G4 powering the Pixel 9 series, are co-developed by Google and Samsung, which has been the case since the first Tensor chip in 2021.

Samsung’s split suggests Google is taking more control over its Tensor chips, similar to what Apple is doing with the A and M series chips. It also means existing thermal issues on Tensor-powered Pixel chips could eventually be fixed and lead to better overall performance, although we’ll have to wait to see these chips in action to assess the improvements.
