There is a very long history in romantic films of changing the ending so that the two main characters are together at the end. There is a somewhat pragmatic answer to this question, which is that the audience of the film just wants to see at least that there is some hope for these two characters at the end of the film. We don’t need to tell the public exactly how it ended. We don’t tell the public exactly where things ended. But we at least give the public the opportunity to try to fill it out themselves. As a fan of the genre, I love romantic stories that end with the two main characters having coffee, because it tells me there is hope.Schulmann:
I felt that if we were going to make the effort to make such an uplifting film about possibility and love, leaving it out felt unsatisfying for a movie audience. I felt like the satisfaction factor is different when you’re reading a book than when you’re at home. There is a nostalgia and a kind of melancholy. You close the book, and you can kind of walk away and say, wow, that was an incredible moment that these people shared together. But I thought that for the film, the visual impact would be so strong that you had to believe that there was a possibility for the future.
