Kung Fu Panda 4 helped DreamWorks break a huge box office record. The new film features the return of Jack Black as Po, the anthropomorphic panda who became a kung fu master over the course of previous films in the animated franchise, which launched in 2008. When it was released in March, it made its mark debut with a 3-day total of $57.9 million at the domestic box office, marking the franchise’s second-best opening behind the original film‘s $60.2 million gross.

By DeadlineTHE Kung Fu Panda 4 The release surpassed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office with a cumulative total of $503.5 million. This gargantuan amount also pushed the four-film franchise as a whole past the $2 billion mark worldwide, becoming the seventh highest-grossing animated franchise in history. This allowed DreamWorks Animation to break an even bigger record by becoming the owner of the most animated franchises having crossed the 2 billion dollar milestone between Kung Fu Panda, ShrekAnd Madagascar.

How Kung Fu Panda 4 Compares to Other DreamWorks Franchise Titles

DreamWorks film is a huge success thanks to its $85 million budget

The animated sequel was a success, even though it was the lowest-grossing film in the franchise so far. He could nevertheless climb higher in the rankings by the end of his run and has probably already won enough for a possible Kung Fu Panda 5 to take into consideration. Moreover, it is the cheapest film in the franchise, with a budget of $85 million that makes its break-even point likely around $170 million, as theaters keep half of the ticket sales. Below, see how this compares to the rest of the franchise as well as entries in DreamWorks’ other $2 billion record holders:

The fact that the film‘s budget is so low despite the all-star cast Kung Fu Panda4 Cast helped it surpass many other competitors in terms of profitability. This is the case despite the fact that so far it has only topped three of the other 13 films of the three record-breaking DreamWorks franchises. However, it’s unclear how high the film‘s global box office will be able to climb by the end of its run, which will likely allow it to at least overtake upcoming titles on the chart, including Kung Fu Panda 3 and eventually Puss in Boots.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is also the highest-grossing film from any of these three franchises to be released so far in the 2020s. With the COVID-19 pandemic and strikes of 2023 impacting box office results- office in the first five years of the decade, crossing the $500 million milestone is not a surefire prospect for any release. So while it may not be a heavyweight on the level of hits such as Shrek the Third Or Madagascar 3the sequel is a title financially worthy of being the one that propels DreamWorks into this record number.
