  • A thorough study of the APK shows that Google is working to bring “Plug and Charge” information to Maps for electric vehicle drivers.
  • Plug and Charge is a charging method that allows the car to do the heavy lifting to authorize its fueling cycle and payment.
  • Such a feature will likely bolster several other additions for electric vehicles through Maps, such as those highlighted during CES 2024.

It looks like Google Maps is gearing up to adopt a feature that could help electric vehicle drivers take advantage of an interesting charging method.

According to an in-depth analysis of the APK carried out by Android Authority, hidden in the latest Maps update are directions to “Plug and Charge” locations. In version 111.15.103, a string in Google’s code explains that this charging method will allow drivers to “charge more easily, without using your phone or charging card.”

This description will likely appear as a brief introduction to the drivers once deployed. Additionally, strings in the app code highlight the upcoming ability for users to use search in Maps to specifically find Plug and Charge locations.

This method of loading appears to be a new standard, with the release BMW SEO, who explained this as “practical charging with unique flexibility.” The automaker said Plug and Charge only requires drivers to connect the cable to their car and let the vehicle do the rest.

It will authenticate to start charging and simultaneously submit its driver’s billing information.

Most importantly, Plug and Charge would work without an internet connection to the station. It appears that this capability targets underground parking lots where connection can become scarce.

Ford, GM and Mercedes are reportedly using this charging method alongside BMW.

Google appears to be expanding the features it offers EV drivers in Maps, as, at CES 2024, the company highlighted better integration for Android Auto. The maps gained the ability to suggest charging stations along your given route, as well as an estimate of how long it would take to refuel with electricity. Google added that the app would also provide an estimate of their vehicle’s battery life at the end of the trip.

The company said the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning are the first to receive it in 2024. It’s unclear whether Google’s work to bring Plug and Charge support will come to Android drivers Auto or strictly for mobile users.

Another feature of Maps involves drivers selecting the type of fuel their car uses, such as gasoline, diesel, electric or hybrid. With this, drivers could benefit from a tailor-made route that would be the most “energy efficient”, regardless of the fuel source their vehicle relies on.
