Tom Cruise approved the use of Impossible mission pictures in Thélmawith director Josh Margolin explaining how he got permission. Thélma stars June Squibb, 94, in her first-ever starring role. THE 93-year-old character Thelma Post seeks revenge and becomes an unlikely action hero after being scammed out of $10,000. Margolin based the character and story on her own 104-year-old grandmother, while ensuring that the film explored the issues that older people face in a meaningful and entertaining way.


In an interview with The Hollywood ReporterMargolin was asked about the action comedy references to Impossible mission franchise via extracts and images from the films and Cruise, and whether Margolin should receive permission from the star herself. Margolin explains the process behind the inclusion of these references and its impact Thélmathe production. Read his explanation below:

This happened during production. We shot two versions of these scenes, one with Tom [TVs and newspapers] and then one with a replaceable green box. It was surprisingly smooth. Nicky Weinstock, who is the producer of the film, worked at the same agency as him and has a few friends in common. We ended up sending the scene into the script to give it some context and then a snippet of the table read. We got his approval and then we went to Paramount, which I guess made things a lot easier there.



Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible references are just a small part of what makes Thelma great

With a 99% critical score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Thélma proves that he has more to offer than his Cruise and Impossible mission the references. Squibb’s hilarious performance in Thélma is enough to make the film a stellar comedy. Margolin shared with THR that Squibb was the only actor he had always wanted for the role, pointing out that she reminded him of his grandmother who inspired the story, and that Squibb had the perfect dramatic and humorous range needed for the role.

In addition to Squibb’s stellar performance, Thélma was well received for the way it handles issues that older people face. The action comedy genre allows Thélma exploring these questions through intelligent humor that doesn’t denigrate its characters or the viewers. It tackles difficult topics, including mortality, without oversimplifying or becoming too dark, an approach that Margolin is able to master by drawing on her real-life experiences with her grandmother.
