Parasite director’s mysterious sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson gets new 2025 release date

Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi film Mickey 17 has a new release date. As the director’s first film since the critically acclaimed Parasitewhich won the Best Picture award at the 92nd Academy Awards, Mickey 17 was eagerly awaited. It also features an all-star cast including Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo. It was originally scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024, but due to production delays due to the 2023 strikes, it was removed from the release schedule.

According to Warner Bros. Pictures, Mickey 17 will now be released in theaters on January 31, 2025. It was also confirmed that the film would be available in IMAX theaters. In Mickey 17at Warner Bros. Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom, the next installment of the Monsterverse, for a theatrical release on March 29.

Why the new Mickey 17 release date is a good thing

With Dune: part two released March 1st Mickey 17 would only be released in theaters less than a month later. He might have struggled to stand out and attract mainstream audiences so soon after the sci-fi spectacle of Dune: part twowhich will also be widely shown in IMAX theaters. Mickey 17 is adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7but it doesn’t have the same place in pop culture as Duneadapted from Frank Herbert’s beloved 1965 novel.

In January 2025, Mickey 17 will stand out more as a visually dazzling science fiction film and as one of the first great films of the year. The only other major theatrical release currently scheduled for January 2025 is Paddington in Peruscheduled for January 17. Although the trio should work well, its family focus won’t conflict with the darker sci-fi elements of Mickey 17which tells the story of a “replaceable” human employee named Mickey Barnes (Pattinson) sent to help colonize an ice planet, with several iterations of Mickey’s death and new bodies needing to be generated.

The new release date also ensures that time can be taken to ensure that Mickey 17 is a project worthy of Bong’s stellar direction. Given the long wait since ParasiteIn 2019, it would be disappointing if the director’s sequel was not of the same quality. Instead of rushing to 2024, the 2025 release date means that Mickey 17 has a better chance of living up to the hype who preceded him.
