Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirms National Treasure 3 is still in development despite recent comments from Nicolas Cage casting doubt on whether the sequel will ever come to fruition. Cage told exclusively Rant screen that “There is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t watch Disney, okay? It’s not there.” The actor’s candid comments come 17 years after the previous sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secretswas released in theaters and ends with a tantalizing cliffhanger about what is on page 47 of the titular book of Presidents of the United States.


During an interview with FilmWebBruckheimer offered a more optimistic update on National Treasure 3, confirming that it is still in development. Well, we hope there will be a National Treasure 3. We’ve been working on it for quite a while. We have a brilliant writer working on it at the moment, so I hope that
if we receive a script in time we will send it to Nic [Cage] and, if he likes it, we’ll make another one

Will National Treasure 3 actually happen?


Bruckheimer update means there is still hope National Treasure 3, but the potential sequel still has a long way to go before becoming a reality. The first one National treasure The film remains highly regarded and continues to feature one of Cage’s most memorable and famous roles. Between the nostalgia, the page 47 cliffhanger and the chance to see Cage reprise the role of Ben Gates, it continues to generate substantial interest in National Treasure 3 and a natural direction for the story.

That being said, the nearly two decades spent in development limbo are concerning, especially since there is still no completed script. Even with a great script, Bruckheimer’s comments confirm that the project will only proceed if it receives Cage’s approval and, of course, it will also have to receive the green light from Disney. Disney’s decision to cancel the National treasure: edge of history a television series after only one season does not bode well for placing their faith in the continuation of the franchise, although their stance may change with the benefit of Cage’s star power.
