Mark Zuckerberg tried the Vision Pro. Here’s what he thinks.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a bit of an OG when it comes to mixed/augmented/virtual reality headsets. After all, his company Meta acquired Oculus VR in 2014 and has been selling Quest VR headsets for years.

So it’s no surprise that Zuckerberg wanted to try Apple’s very first VR headset, the Vision Pro. What’s a little surprising is that he decided to share his thoughts on this subject on video.

In a Instagram postShot with Quest’s high-resolution mixed reality relay, Zuck basically laid out a list of reasons why he thinks Meta’s headset is better, and not just in the sense that it’s better value for money than the Vision Pro, much more expensive (Quest starts at $499, while the Vision Pro starts at $3,499).

“It seems like a lot of people thought the Vision Pro would be better quality because it’s designed by Apple and costs three thousand dollars more,” Zuckerberg said. “But honestly, I’m quite surprised that Quest is much better for the vast majority of things people use these headsets for, with that price difference.”

Zuckerberg praised Apple’s eye-tracking and high-resolution displays, while noting that Apple had to make many compromises to achieve this level of quality.

These tradeoffs include the weight of the Vision Pro, which it says is about 120 grams heavier than the Quest 3 (the difference is actually not entirely trivial to calculate; the Quest 3 weighs 515 grams, while the Vision Pro weighs 600 to 650 grams, depending on configuration, but this does not include the separate battery, which weighs an additional 353 grams). Zuckerberg also said that the Quest is more comfortable, has a wider field of view (the Quest 3 has a horizontal FoV of 110 degrees, while Apple doesn’t list this detail in its technical specifications for the Vision Pro), and he criticized the “motion blur” on the Apple Vision Pro that occurs when you move, calling the Quest’s video “much sharper.”

“After using it, I don’t just think Quest is the best value; I think Quest is the best product, period,” Zuckerberg concluded.

Of course, this isn’t an unbiased review, and Zuckerberg ignores or glosses over some of the traits where the Vision Pro clearly wins, such as processing power and additional features like EyeSight. Check out our feature comparison of the two headsets.
