OnePlus 12R Verizon support missing, but coming

TL;DR

  • The OnePlus 12R currently does not work properly on Verizon’s network despite supporting the correct band.
  • OnePlus assured us that it is working with Verizon to resolve this issue, but there is no set date for a rollout yet.
  • For now, we advise Verizon subscribers to avoid investing in the 12R.

At the time, OnePlus had partnerships with Verizon and T-Mobile that allowed its phones to land on store shelves. The company hasn’t enjoyed this status for a few years now, but most OnePlus phones still work on these networks: you simply can’t buy the phone directly from the carriers.

The OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, for example, support all bands of the three major US carriers. However, the OnePlus 12 apparently has green list status with Verizon, while the 12R does not appear to enjoy the same status, as we learn today. This would mean that, for now, the OnePlus 12R won’t work on the Verizon network, even though it has the proper band support.

We discovered it thanks to a user on the XDA Developer forums. This user purchased OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R phones for family members and was upset to find that the OnePlus 12s worked well on Verizon, but the 12Rs did not. According to this user’s investigation, a Verizon “VP” confirmed to them that 12 is on the allowed list on the network, but that 12R is not. We reached out to OnePlus to get the scoop, and sure enough, the company confirmed that the 12R was facing connection issues at Verizon. This didn’t confirm or deny the allowlist theory, but something is definitely broken.

Fortunately, OnePlus is currently working with Verizon to address this issue. Here is a statement from OnePlus, through a company spokesperson:

The OnePlus 12R is capable of working with all major carriers and on all major 5G networks in the US, including Verizon. We are currently investigating any unexpected cases users may encounter with Verizon’s network and are working with the carrier to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, the company hasn’t given us any details on how long this might take. Theoretically, Verizon just needs to “enable” support for 12R, which isn’t too complicated. However, when this might happen, no one knows.

For now, if you’re a Verizon subscriber and considering the 12R, we recommend waiting or purchasing the OnePlus 12 (on the product website) instead, because it will work with Big Red right out of the box.

Also, for the record, this connectivity issue should not affect 12R usage on T-Mobile or AT&T. This is a Verizon specific issue.
