Dusk Star Jackson Rathbone looks back on the production of the original film, recalling how lead star Robert Pattinson was embarrassed by his glittery vampire makeup. Rathbone portrayed Jasper Hale, a vampire who would marry into the Cullen family to leave behind his bloody and violent past throughout the American Civil War. Alongside Pattinson, he would reprise his role in all five Dusk films that adapted Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling supernatural romance novels.

During Dusk panel at Emerald City Comic Con, popverse According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, Rathbone thought back to filming the original film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke and released in 2008. The actor revealed that none of the cast members playing any of the vampires, particularly Pattinson, loved makeup for their glistening skin, and that he even hated clear, sunny days due to the speed of production to ensure they filmed sparkling sequences in the sun. Check out Rathbone’s explanation below:

“They were doing all the Twilight Sparkle tests, so every now and then we’d see Rob [Pattinson] “I come out of the makeup trailer completely pissed and angry. Half of his face sparkles brightly, the other half sparkles a little. It’s like, “Dude, what’s going on?” It went from a rainy day to a sunny day, which is even worse, because if the weather is nice, they have to make us sparkle. It was one of those things where the sun came out and you were like, “Yay!” Except that production, “it fucks us up even more!” »

Why do Twilight vampires sparkle?

Meyer has a reason for this

While DuskMeyer’s unique, shimmering vampire skin stands out from other media featuring these creatures. It is rooted in the lore that has surrounded vampires for most of their history in popular culture. Much like other examples, Meyer’s vampires are impervious to most harm, though the author explained that this is due to a change at the cellular level that makes each cell harder. As a result, vampire skin takes on stone-like features, such as marble or granite, and can refract sunlight, adding a new twist to why creatures avoid sunlight in Meyer’s world.

While Meyer’s story behind the vampire skin is incredibly detailed and blends seamlessly with the physical appearance of vampires, it is also undoubtedly one of her most controversial decisions in how she approached his vampires. Many critics were quick to decry this trait as part of their critiques of Duskwith Interview with a Vampire Author Anne Rice lightly mocks the glistening-skinned Cullens by stating that her creations pitied them. While movies have made glitter skin infamous, maybe the next Dusk TV series could offer a more user-friendly translation.

While Dusk While the series has grown in popularity and critical acclaim since its release, it’s clear that the glittering vampires remain one of its most controversial legacies. Not only was it aesthetically confusing, but Rathbone’s recollections highlight the difficulty of translating the effect from page to screen. Dusk by entering the world of animation for its small screen adaptation, at least the new cast will be spared the long and uncomfortable process endured by the previous actors.
