Dune Director Finally Reacts to Deadpool 3’s ‘Horrible’ Popcorn Bucket

Deadpool & Wolverine’s marketing may have peaked with its popcorn bucket, but the Dune director believes it still hasn’t surpassed the most infamous.

The incredibly obscene spin-off from the upcoming MCU film was revealed to shocked fans in late May. The Deadpool & Wolverine Popcorn Bucket, often photographed dripping with butter, features a gaping-mouthed Wolverine, ready to be stuffed with popcorn.

Fans are obviously aware of the meme, with many celebrating how it depicts Deadpool and Wolverine’s crude humor, while other die-hard fans even turn it into an action figure.

But Dune director Denis Villeneuve isn’t as impressed, joking with Canadian entertainment outlet Etalk that Deadpool 3’s gross popcorn bucket didn’t even come close to surpassing the infamous “wormussy “.

“They’re extremely jealous of our bucket and they’re doing their best to try to bring something horrible into the world. But the Dune bucket is incomparable, I think,” Villeneuve said.

The popcorn bucket debate doesn’t seem to be going anywhere either. While ornate popcorn buckets have always been collectibles for fans attending theme parks like Disney World, they’ve become important to moviegoers as an add-on to sell in theaters.

Following the success of the Dune Sand Worm popcorn bucket, a number of other buckets and related products were released, including the Inside Out 2 Emotion Buckets and the Despicable Me 4 Cup Holders.

But right now, the Dune and Deadpool & Wolverine popcorn buckets are going head-to-head in terms of just plain weird appeal to fans. And while he thinks the Dune bucket was better, Villeneuve doesn’t hate what Deadpool 3 did.

“I’m not saying I don’t like the bucket,” he said. “I’m just saying it was hard to beat the Dune bucket.”
