BeReal bought by Voodoo for a huge sum of money

All those totally disposable BeReal photos you took at work over the past few years were apparently worth a lot of money to someone.

The eponymous “Gen Z social network” has been acquired for 500 million euros (or about $541 million), according to a press release issued Monday by its new parent company. Voodoo. If Voodoo is above all a publisher of mobile games, it also has a application portfolio like Wemoms, a social network for moms. After this acquisition, BeReal is the most notable name in the group.

As part of the agreement, Alexis Barreyat, CEO and co-founder of BeReal, will oversee the transition to new management before leaving the company. It is unclear whether this purchase will result in layoffs.

Crushable speed of light

For those of us disconnected from youth, BeReal has exploded in recent years because of its simplicity: once a day, users are asked to take and post a photo of what they’re doing at that moment there, within two minutes. This has changed somewhat over time (you can now post more than once a day, for starters), but the simple initial premise has built up a user base that Voodoo says is north of 40 million active users.

Despite this success, this acquisition is not a big surprise. Its popularity was waning noticeably as early as a year and a half ago, and recent reports indicated that BeReal was less than a year away from completely running out of money without some sort of lifeline.
