End of the Frozen Empire – Why the Ancient Containment Unit Works Explained by the Director

Despite its destruction during the climax, Gil Kenan explains why the old containment unit still functions in the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire END. After being teased for having trouble in Life after deathIn the post-credits scene, much of the new sequel’s story revolved around the Spengler family working with Winston to find a solution. The third act of the film sees the villainous Garraka opening the containment unit with the help of the melancholy spirit Melody to unleash a ghost army. In an effort to defeat the divine being, the team reverses the unit’s ability to serve as a giant ghost trap, capturing Garraka.

In honor of the film‘s release, LeWrap spoke with Kenan to break down the sequel’s various plot points, including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘Sending in progress. When asked how the old containment unit still functions after being broken, the co-writer/director noted that the device is “a very imprecise tool“, and that its late theatrical revival aligns with a key theme of the franchise as a whole. We’re talking about a very imprecise tool for capturing decades of spirits. What’s important thematically and dramatically is that we have all these new traps. We have new tools, we have this new containment unit, but there is an intrinsic value at the heart of that tool that is underloved, underappreciated, belittled because it is past its expiration date, and you were ready for the brightest and latest technology.

But, like many things in this world, there needs to be some sort of refocusing on what those core values ​​are and what really matters. And an appreciation that sometimes those old pillars are actually what can help define the difference between success and failure. This containment unit is actually much more than just a hollow shell, it becomes a symbol of the fight against ghosts – its longevity, its permanence. And if you can get this thing going again, then we might have a chance to keep telling these stories.

The Containment Unit story showed that Frozen Empire learned the best lesson from the afterlife

Although the film earned a low score of 44% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, some of the more positive reviews for ghost hunters: Frozen Empire indicated that the sequel had learned from some of the criticisms leveled at Life after death. The dedication to fan service and nostalgia has been generally well-received by audiences, although some have lamented that it is less of a way to expand the franchise and more of a way to attract fans for a long time.

En route to Ghostbusters: Frozen EmpireIn ‘s story, however, it’s clear that Kenan and Reitman learned some of the lessons from their predecessor by better delivering both nostalgia and something new. Members of the original cast were given much bigger and impactful roles in the sequel than Life after deathCameos from, particularly Dan Aykroyd’s Ray and Ernie Hudson’s Winston, who featured throughout the new film‘s running time. Even with smaller roles than their counterparts, Annie Potts’ Janine, Bill Murray’s Venkman, and William Atherton’s Peck were generally significant inclusions.

The incorporation of the original Containment Unit is also a promising sign of how Kenan and Reitman are building the franchise’s future beyond that. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. By instituting a more meaningful exploration of iconic elements like the device while also serving as a launching pad for new villains and characters, the duo slowly and effectively passes the torch between the two generations of Ghostbusters while honoring the legacy that was left to them. With Frozen EmpireThe mid-credits scene sets up a similar continuation of this trend in a potential Ghostbusters 6it will be interesting to see what happens next.
