Google Messages hides your composed texts when you leave a conversation

What do you want to know

  • In its stable and beta versions, Google Messages would no longer be displayed when a discussion thread contains a message written in its main list.
  • Reddit users are reporting that the old italicized “You” tag, followed by your composed message, no longer appears in the conversation list.
  • However, our internal testing shows that Messages still recognizes a message written by moving the thread position to the top of the app.

Oddly, Google Messages no longer displays a user’s draft in its main view.

The issue was reported in the Pixel subreddit users pointing out how messages no longer show “Draft” in the conversation list (via 9to5Google). The change was spotted in the stable version of Messages (v20240521_00_RC01) and its beta version (version 20240531_00_RC00).

The user’s Reddit report states that typing a message and then leaving the thread displays the most recently sent or received text instead of “Draft.”

Our internal testing with a Moto Edge Plus (2023) shows that Messages always recognizes a change in a conversation. Instead of displaying the message in italics, the discussion thread will be placed at the top of the list. Tapping on this thread will display what you were writing in the text field.

Deleting your draft will return the thread to its previous position in your message list.

Users are wondering if this is a bug or just another feature reduction that Google has implemented for Messages.

Google Messages no longer shows draft previews in text messages. Is this a bug? Or has the feature been removed? Since r/GooglePixel

If this is not it a bug, the disappearance of drafts from the main view wouldn’t be too surprising since Google has removed other features, like organizing for individuals and businesses. The Messages app used to display bullets for “All”, “Personal” and “Business” texts, but the choice to organize messages into these categories has been removed.

The feature was successful in helping users declutter their Messages app, as they weren’t forced to see “Business” texts if they didn’t want to. Last year this was thought to be a bug (similar to today), but it quickly became a feature that no longer exists.

In addition, users will benefit from a new, cleaner writing field in Messages. The field will offer an emoji icon and a plus icon for adding images and other media instead of being filled with other message options. The change is designed to take over the old right-aligned chat box that the app previously offered.
