PlayStation layoffs are confirmed to have impacted Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man

Insomniac Games announced that it was also affected by layoffs at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and PlayStation Studios.

In a announcement on Twitter /Insomniac said: “Like several other teams across SIE and PlayStation Studios, Insomniac Games was impacted by yesterday’s layoffs. There are no words to express our feelings about this. It’s a moment solemn and unprecedented for our studio.”

Insomniac continued: “We are focusing our energy on helping everyone affected by this difficult time. For those hiring, there are great people looking for new roles who have made significant contributions to Insomniac’s history. We are extremely grateful to them and they will be missed.”

Insomniac’s announcement follows planned layoffs at SIE and PlayStation Studios.

Earlier this week, PlayStation announced plans to close its London studio and lay off around 900 people. According to Jim Ryan, president and CEO of SIE, this is expected to affect “employees everywhere.” This is all part of a “plan to begin reducing our overall workforce globally by approximately 8%.” [percent] or around 900 people,” continued the CEO.

In addition to job cuts at Insomniac, there will be “reductions” at the Firesprite studio, the co-developers of Horizon Call of the Mountain.

The most recent version of Insomniac, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, was well-received by fans and critics, including our own editor, Jake Tucker, who praised the way the open-world adventure game “prioritizes fun above all else” and gave the game four stars out of five.

Spider-Man 2Sony’s massive $300 budget has raised many questions about the sustainability of Sony’s business practices (via Forbes). It looks like these chickens have finally come home to roost. However, as usual, it seems that it is the employees, not the managers, who are paying the price.

2024 has already been an extremely difficult year for the games industry, with layoffs also happening at Supermassive Games, Visual Concepts Austin, Embracer Group and Activision Blizzard – and it’s only this month.

Growing unsustainability in the video game industry is disrupting the lives of employees. We sincerely hope that those affected can get back on their feet.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of best PS5 games there as well as one of the best PS5 exclusives.
