“I was turned into a pseudo-celebrity. My personal life became public, which was very hard for Ken.”

If you’ve been following Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story over the past few years, you’ll no doubt have heard of or watched the Hulu series. The act.

The act, starring Joey King as Gypsy, aired in 2019 and became a huge hit, reigniting interest in Gypsy and the medical abuse her mother subjected her to. All this happened while Gypsy was still in prison. She did not consent to the series and had no influence over how her story was dramatized.

Now that she’s out of prison, Gypsy has the chance to share her own story in her own words. In his new e-book, Release: Conversations on the eve of freedomGypsy spoke about the impact the show had on her life.

Apparently, the attention the show brought to her and her ex-fiancé Ken led him to break up with her.

Gypsy Rose and Ken began their relationship after exchanging emails while she was in prison. They knew each other for a year and a half before getting engaged in 2019. Four months after sharing the news of their engagement, it was announced that they had broken up. She called their separation “her first experience with real heartbreak.”

It turns out their relationship hit a rocky patch soon after. The act has ended its run, and Gypsy has now explained that increased attention and scrutiny from the general public contributed to the end of their engagement.

“I was transformed into a pseudo-celebrity,” Gypsy writes in the book. “My personal life became public, which was very hard on Ken. Articles on Clickbait appeared mockingly announcing our engagement.”

“Ken was a private person and didn’t want attention or scrutiny,” she continued. “Even though I understood and shared his feelings, I took it hard when he ended our relationship.”

Gypsy went on to say that she felt lost after their relationship ended: “The rite of passage of losing my first love happened alone in prison rather than in my room, surrounded by girlfriends playing me a mix of breaking up and eating pints of Ben & Jerry’s like in the movies.”

Gypsy later married Ryan Anderson, whom she met after writing him a letter in prison. They became engaged on their third visit together and married in a small prison ceremony with no guests on July 21, 2022.

After his release from prison, the couple made several media appearances together and proudly showed off their relationship on social media. In March 2024, three months after her release, Gypsy filed for divorce and separated from Ryan. Their breakup would be shown in the upcoming Gypsy docuseries.

After splitting from Ryan, Gypsy was seen reuniting with Ken and getting a tattoo with him.
