Love Lies Bleeding star Katy O’Brian says the film is a ‘queer fantasy’

Intoxicated by each other, their electric dynamic soon sets off an increasingly disastrous chain of events involving Lou’s crime family (Ed Harris and Dave Franco).

Speaking about what attracted her to the role, O’Brian exclusively told RadioTimes.com: “I mean, I saw an open casting call, because they couldn’t find the person to play Jackie, and he was a queer bodybuilder from the Midwest – and that’s who I am.

“And then it was, you know, an A24 movie and I love their movies, it was Rose Glass and I thought St. Maud was great, and Kristen Stewart was the other lead and I was like, ‘Yeah, It’s a queer fantasy.’ movie.'”

She continued: “And up until that point, I had never had the opportunity to play a queer character on screen, so I was like, ‘Yeah, give me that.’

“And then when I auditioned and got the call back and got the script, it wasn’t until then that I knew everything that Jackie had been through and it was like terrifying, but I thought just that it was the most gripping storyline I had ever read and I was obsessed.

“I knew if I didn’t do it, I was going to be very sad.”

Love Lies Bleeding premiered at the Sundance film Festival in January to rave reviews, with critics praising Stewart and O’Brian’s performances as a toxic, electric couple.

Speaking about the actors’ casting, Glass exclusively said RadioTimes.com: “It was easy to cast Lou – well, easy in the sense that, you know, Kristen was who I had in mind for the character from the beginning.

“She was the first person we sent the script to and she immediately said yes, which was a dream.

“But yeah, Jackie was really hard to choose, and we spent hours searching and seeing hundreds of people, basically, because we needed someone who was really physically confident as a bodybuilder.”

She continued, “And we were really getting close to the wire. I think by the end we had already cast all the other characters, and filming was getting closer and we still hadn’t found Jackie.

“And then, luckily, Katy O’Brian saw this tweet our casting directors posted, and it was kind of extraordinary that we’d never come across her before.

“And obviously she’s perfect for it because she’s an actress. A lot of the people we were getting tapes from weren’t actors and kind of came from the sports world, but didn’t have acting experience. actor, and it’s a pretty important dramatic role.

“So she had a little bit of everything we needed, and she’s not a bodybuilder now but she had competed in the past. And from the moment we cast her, we were shooting two weeks later. “
